The Fourth of Fuckin' July

The son of one of the drivers was killed in Afghanistan. He was killed by a rocket on the Fourth of July. There were pictures of him posted in all of the breakrooms. He looked like a boy scout who was hoping to win his desert warfare merit badge; a kid with a nice smile.

We all signed a card for our fellow worker. We all said stupid shit.

"Chuck, we are all sorry to hear of your terrible loss."

I signed the card and said something stupid too.

"Chuck, God bless you and your family."

I wanted to say, "Chuck, I am sorry I could not end this bullshit war."

What fucking bullshit.

What fucking bullshit.

Sometimes the business of livin' and dyin' is a sad, sad thing. Now I'm doing the same thing YOU did, which is to struggle to say something relevant and comforting without being cliched. Words just aren't enough, sometimes, are they?

Comfort yourself in that there is nothing to say.

Bullshit wars started by old men that kill our children.

Honoring the dead is all that is left for friends..............endless tears for the parents.

Was a time the Canadian fuckers doing the war thing in Afghanistan were all anonymous to me. Now I know a few of their parents. None of them have been blown up yet.

I am finding it as difficult to word a comment here as you clearly found in signing your condolences.

What can one say ?

The war in Afghanistan is not just a bullshit, it is unwinnable.

The sides keep shifting and tribal allegiances are made and withdrawn according to unfathomable complexities and intricate betrayals. Those same mujahideen once funded by the west against the Soviets are now the enemy; the minister recently installed in Kabul quick to denounce long standing allies as Taleban. I believe he owns the most profitable poppy fields in Afghanistan. But that's alright; he's on 'our' side.

Happy fucking Fourth of July, eh ?
