The smell

So I started the new job today. It was OK. More some other time. What I ended up thinking is that if you willingly spend more than 5 hours a day taking the bus to work and back you are going to end up looking for a place to piss. In San Francisco the public sector and private industry have joined hands in closing every restroom in the whole goddam city. The last time I had to use a men's room in Golden Gate Park it was flooded in piss, ankle deep. It was the only public restroom for miles. I waded in and did my manly thing. In most of the city there's nothing that nice available. Despite the fact that it was raining off and on the whole fucking city stinks of piss. Really, the whole city is one giant urinal. I suppose I'll just have to take advantage of the city's many reeking doorways.

Not good for people our age. Just thinking about peeing makes me have to pee.

The pee-pee predicament is precisely what went through my mind when I thought about all those hours on the bus....

Good luck.

Why would you use a nasty, smelly restroom in Golden Gate Park? That's what trees and bushes are for.

As for public toilets in San Francisco, tell me where you're being let off by the bus and I'll tell you my favorite, secret locations.

Five hours back and forth? I hope you're using this as an excuse to read the entire Harvard Great Books Series while doing a part-time job.

I am always amazed how tourists love SF. I do too, but the stink can be so annoying. Hey, it ain't gals that are doing it either. What is it with guys and pee? My neighbors actually encouraged their two-year olds to pee on the street tree. But today's parents are another rant.

tony and "Eclectic Reader", thanks for your comments. Eclectic Reader's blog looks really interesting.

SF Mike, I have my list of little known public restrooms but lately they're all closed with big signs reading "closed for cleaning". I hit three in a row the other day and ended up calling a friend and begging him to let me into his apartment. I forget why I entered that horrorshow in the park but there was a reason why the bushes were not a viable alternative. Probably too many kids with vigilant mommies around. I didn't want to scandalize anybody or have my picture posted on SFist.
